About the Suzuki Method
What is Suzuki Method?
Suzuki Method is also known as the ‘Mother Tongue’ Method, as it is based on the idea of learning the mother tongue language. Just as infants absorb their mother tongue language with ease, so young children can absorb musical and technical concepts through Suzuki’s extremely well thought out step by step progression of pieces. Suzuki teachers are extremely well trained and have many ideas and strategies to create a positive and holistic learning environment during lessons. Suzuki pupils learn everything by ear until they can confidently play the first few pieces in book 1 with good tone and posture. Music reading is then introduced using different repertoire. It is essential that parents create the optimal environment at home. This means a commitment to practising every day (ideally always at the same time), giving genuinely positive and encouraging feedback, and listening to the Suzuki recording each day. Children have individual lessons every week as well as regular group lessons.

I would like my child to begin Suzuki violin or viola lessons. What do I do next?
You are about to embark on a truly wonderful and rewarding musical journey with your child. As with everything, the more preparation you can do, the better.
Step 1: Read Nurtured by Love by Shinichi Suzuki. This book will give you valuable insight into the Suzuki Method philosophy.
Step 2: Contact Louisa Stuber about coming to observe group lessons at the Little Venice Suzuki Group. The more observation you do with your child, the more you will begin to see how the method works.
Step 3: Find an individual teacher for your child. The best place to look is on the London Suzuki Group website/teachers
Step 4: Start listening to Suzuki volume 1 for violin (or viola). This is available on CD with the book, or on iTunes Store. You and your child will need to listen to this recording every day as part of the Suzuki programme.
